Which way do I turn the adjustments?
Turn the adjustments clockwise to increase speed or gain. Turn the adjustments counter-clockwise to decrease the speed or gain.
How many turns do the adjustments have?
There are two types of potentiometers on the boards: a single turn and a 20 turn. The single turn pot has approximately 270 degrees of rotation, whereas the 20 turn pot has 20-25 turns of rotation.
How do I identify if a pot is a single turn or a 20 turn variety?
Single turn pots have a square short white plastic area to insert a screwdriver. When turning, the pot has noticeable stops at either end. This pot will be damaged if further rotation is attempted.
The 20 turn pots are rectangular and tall. The 20 turn pots have a small brass head protruding from the top of the pot; this brass head is the adjustment. The pot has a slip clutch and can be turned in either direction until adjustment becomes firm OR the pot clicks. Do not continue turning beyond this point or the pot may be damaged by excessive adjustment. To reset the pot, turn clockwise stopping at 25 turns OR when it clicks, then turn counter clockwise 12 turns.
I set up the machine per your installation manual and it will not work properly. Why does the machine work well one day but not the next?
First, make sure your engine is running properly.
Instabilities can be caused by improper adjustments, damaged / defective actuators or controllers, engines that do not run well, or inconsistent loads.
Once you get the governor properly adjusted, the system should be stable and repeatable every day. It may be a little aggressive on a cold startup in which case you need to back the gain down a bit.
If the machine varies day by day, please check the following steps listed below. If some of these steps have been done, they should be repeated with the exception of controller adjustment.
Does the throttle actuator and carburetor move freely?
The actuator should spring return to low throttle when not powered up.
Is the actuator pushing the carburetor shut?
The actuator should be set so that when the carb is resting on its stop, the actuator linkage travels past the carb stop position by 1/8″ (there should be spring tension). You will need to disconnect the ball linkage to check this. Adjust linkage accordingly then reconnect. Miss-adjustment can cause low speed operation problems.
Other troubleshooting methods to try:
Disconnect the two wires to the actuator. Using jumper wires or other means, connect +12 volts (battery power) and ground to the two actuator terminals. The actuator should rotate to fully open. By hand move it open and closed; other than overcoming a spring, the actuator should be able to move freely. It should have no rubbing, grinding, roughness, stickiness, etc. If it exhibits any of these, the actuator may be bad.
(Typically a bad actuator will result in very large engine speed swings and/or engine speed jerkiness.)
If the controller has a quick disconnect, verify the terminals are in good repair. Occasionally corrosion can cause odd and obscure symptoms.
Verify the carburetor idle is set BELOW the minimum governed engine speed. If the carburetor is set above the controller, the controller is not in control. This can cause a large delay in accelerating the engine once a higher speed is requested.
Adjust the pots per the installation instructions. Set speeds are specific for each machine. PG does not know what each particular machine requires though we do have a list of presets for various controllers.
If a machine has been checked per the above and is still inconsistent, the control box is suspect. Unfortunately there is no definitive way to field test the controllers. To determine if the controller might be defective, swap the controller to a known “good machine” and see if the problems transfer with it.
If the controller is suspect, it is recommended to replace the controller and / or send it to PGLLC for evaluation where it can be tested on a test machine. Request an RMA from customer service to return a part for evaluation. Or, Contact Us Online >
Can I take the back cover plate off? Will this void my warranty?
It is expected that the end user will need to make controller gain/speed and adjustments. On most controllers, the cover plate must be removed to make these adjustments. Removing the cover plate to make adjustments will not void the warranty. Physical abuse or damage to components while making adjustments will not be covered. Do not force an adjustment past its stop. After reinstalling the cover plate, it is recommended to seal it with RTV silicone.
How do I set the On/Off position on the DIP switch?
Some DIP switches have “off” printed near the top with an arrow pointing toward the bottom. The correct setting for “off” is to depress the side near the TIP of the arrow.
